Tax Rate Requests (L-4034s and L-4029s)

ARE YOU A TAXING UNIT? IF SO, PLEASE BOOKMARK THIS PAGE.

Tax rate requests are the responsibility of each taxing unit. Sample documents have been created by Berrien County Equalization as a courtesy and can be found at the links below. Taxing units must verify and certify their finalized requests.

FAQ

  • When are the sample L-4034s & L-4029s provided?
    • It cannot be stressed enough that Berrien County Equalization has historically decided to provide sample forms as a courtesy and we do not guarantee that they will be provided in the future. Historically, sample forms have been provided at the earliest possible convenience which is usually early in May. Please keep checking this page. If you need forms sooner, please consider preparing your own form using information from the L-4028.
  • What is the L-4034?
    • The L-4034 is nothing other than a calculations worksheet. It does not get filed but rather, it is an optional tool to bridge the L-4028 to the L-4029.
  • What is the L-4029?
    • The Tax Rate Request is a mandatory form. Each Taxing Unit that seeks to levy property taxes must file an L-4029 with the county.
  • Where does the L-4029 get filed?
    • Please see the top right corner of the form.
  • When is the L-4029 due?
    • September 30 of each year. However, it is typical and helpful to submit the form much earlier, particularly if you are seeking a summer levy.
  • Where does the information on the L-4029 come from?
    • Much of the information comes from the Taxing Unit with regard to millage types and dates. However, the information having to do with millage rollbacks comes from the L-4028.
  • What is the L-4028?
    • The L-4028 shows all of the millage reduction calculations for the county. It is the only form in this process that is the county's responsibility.
  • When is the L-4028 completed?
    • The L-4028 is due on or before the first Monday in June. That said, the Berrien County L-4028 can usually be found on our website in early May.
