Learn about the Laws

Wondering about the basics of the recreational marijuana laws passed in 2018?  Here are some of the important things to know:

  • You must be over 21 to use and possess marijuana.
  • Adults may possess and transport up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana at any time.
  • Adults may keep up to 10 ounces at home; amounts higher than 2.5 ounces must be locked away.
  • Adults may grow up to 12 marijuana plants at home.
  • Don’t use marijuana in public (including schools, parks, sidewalks, etc.).
  • Federal land is under federal law, and marijuana is still federally illegal. If you choose to use marijuana, please consider if federal laws apply (such as public universities, reservations, public housing, post offices, etc.)
  • Don’t transport marijuana across state lines.
  • No marijuana product can be sold without a license from Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
  • Do not operate vehicles or other machinery under the influence of marijuana.
  • If you have marijuana products in your car, keep them out of sight.
  • Don’t drive high.
  • Talk to your employer, landlord, and/or probation officer about parameters around using or growing marijuana.
