Batteries

Recycling certain batteries keeps heavy metals out of landfills and our environment. Battery recycling also saves resources because recovered plastic and metals can be used to make new batteries.

***Common alkaline batteries are no longer considered hazardous. Please note which places listed below will take any battery vs rechargeable batteries only.

Rechargable, Non-Rechargeable and Automobile Batteries

• Household Hazardous Waste Collections: Household (rechargeable AND non-rechargeable), vehicle, boat, and mower batteries are accepted at the county sponsored collections. See HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE in this guide for a list of collection events. 
• Radio Shack, Niles: 722 S. 11th Street, Niles. 684-7368. Accepts rechargable AND non-rechargeable batteries (not all Radio Shack stores accept the non-rechargable batteries). 
• Southeast Berrien County Landfill Recycle Station: 3200 Chamberlain Road, Buchanan, 695-2500. More information about this drop-off site can be found under DROP-OFF RECYCLING in this guide.
• St. Joseph Recycling Drop-off Center: 1160 Broad St., at the entrance to St. Joseph Public Works facility, 1st & 3rd Sat. of the month 9:30-Noon, and 3rd Wed. of the month 5-6pm. • Taylor Rental: 2524 M-139, Benton Harbor. 925-2125. Accepts small batteries up to cell phone size.
• Village Do-It-Best Hardware: 106 W. Ferry St., Berrien Springs. 473-5811. Accepts household batteries.

Rechargable Batteries Only

• Lowe's Home Improvement: 1300 Mall Dr., Benton Harbor. 927-6000; 2055 S. 11th St., Niles, 591-3000. Drop-off bin inside front entrance.
• Michiana Metal and Scrap Recycling: 800 Carberry Road, Niles. 269-687-5865. Hours Mon-Fri. 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Sat. 8 a.m.-10:30. Accepts rechargable and automobile batteries only.
• Pater True Value: 4032 M-139, St. Joseph. 556-9971.
• Radio Shack: Accepts household rechargeable batteries-NiCd, NiMH and Li-ion. 1359 Mall Dr, Benton Harbor, 925-0366; and 722 S. 11th St., Niles, 684-7368 (Niles store also takes non-rechargeable batteries).

  — Many retailers of electronics accept rechargeable batteries. Many jewelers and pharmacies collect Button Batteries used in watches, hearing aids, etc. Inquire at individual stores.
