Recycling certain batteries keeps heavy metals out of landfills and our environment. Battery recycling also saves resources because recovered plastic and metals can be used to make new batteries.

***Common alkaline batteries are no longer considered hazardous. Please note which places listed below will take any battery vs rechargeable batteries only.

Accepts Various Battery Types

  • BatteriesPlus: 2061 M-139, Benton Harbor. 925-7374. Accepts household non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries.

  • Household Hazardous Waste Collections: Household rechargeable AND non-rechargeable, vehicle, boat, and mower batteries are accepted at the county sponsored collections. See HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE in this guide for a list of collection events. 
  • Jackie Taglia Recycling Center (St. Joseph): 1160 Broad St., at the entrance to St. Joseph Public Works facility, 1st Saturday of the month 9:30-Noon, and 3rd Wed. of the month 5-6pm.   • Radio Shack, Niles: 722 S. 11th Street, Niles. 684-7368. Accepts rechargeable AND non-rechargeable batteries (not all Radio Shack stores accept the non-rechargeable batteries). 
  • Southeast Berrien County Landfill Recycle Station: 3200 Chamberlain Road, Buchanan, 695-2500. More information about this drop-off site can be found under DROP-OFF RECYCLING in this guide.

Rechargeable Batteries Only

  • Call 2 Recycle:, offers programs to help businesses, schools, etc. recycle rechargeable batteries.
  • Home Depot Stores: 2075 Pipestone Rd., Benton Harbor. 926-2173. Accepts rechargeable batteries from power tools. Check near the "Returns" area for a collection bin or ask a Store Associate. 
  • Lowe's Home Improvement: 1300 Mall Dr., Benton Harbor. 927-6000; 2055 S. 11th St., Niles, 591-3000. Drop-off bin inside front entrance.
  • Pater True Value 4032 M-139, St. Joseph. 556-9971.
  • Radio Shack: Accepts household rechargeable batteries-NiCd, NiMH and Li-ion. 1359 Mall Dr, Benton Harbor, 925-0366; and 722 S. 11th St., Niles, 684-7368 (Niles store also takes non-rechargeable batteries).
  • Staples: 1485 Mall Dr., Benton Harbor. 927-2242.
  • Taylor Rental: 2524 M-139, Benton Harbor. 925-2125. Accepts small rechargeable batteries up to cell phone size.
  • ZBattery: 1826 Hilltop Rd, St. Joseph. 800-624-8681 or 983-7155. Contact Bryan Noonan. Accepts NiCad, NimH, Sealed lead acid, Gel cell, AGM, Auto batteries, Li-Ion (All rechargeable).

    — Many retailers of electronics accept rechargeable batteries. Many jewelers and pharmacies collect Button Batteries used in watches, hearing aids, etc. Inquire at individual stores.
