JURY DUTY FAQs

MEDICAL QUESTIONS

I have a medical problem and I don't feel that I would be able to serve.
To be excused from jury duty for a medical reason, a letter must be submitted from your physician stating that you are unable to serve. If your disability is permanent please have your physician state so.

I don't hear well and I am afraid I will miss significant testimony.
We suggest that individuals with slight hearing problems participate in the jury selection so that they can hear the acoustics in the courtroom. If they can not hear properly at that time they should advise the judge or bailiff and they will be excused. Persons with severe hearing problems should send a letter from their physician and they will be excused.

JOB AND SCHOOL QUESTIONS

I am self-employed and it would be a hardship for me to serve.
Self-employed persons are limited to one case, which could be only one or more days in a 12-month period. This means that you will be able to select one date from your list of scheduled days to serve. Please wait until you receive your follow-up letter with the dates, you are to call before contacting the jury clerk for details. This letter should be sent to you approximately three weeks before your month of service begins.

My employer does not compensate me for the time that I will miss while on jury duty.
Unfortunately, the law does not require that employers compensate employees for the time missed while serving jury duty. However, employers may not in any way penalize employees for serving jury duty.

I am a college student, do I still have to serve and miss classes?
If you are a college student, please provide verification that you will be in school during the month you are on call for jury duty. With verification, your jury service could be changed to a month when you are available.

CHILDREN QUESTIONS

I am a nursing mother. Do I have to serve?
If the child is not taking any supplemental feedings, a letter must be submitted by the pediatrician for you to be excused.

I have small children and don't have a sitter. Do you provide daycare?
Day care services are not available at the courthouse. Jurors are notified several months in advance of their month of jury service and this should give you ample time to locate a sitter or a daycare center who you are comfortable with.

I can't afford a sitter or daycare.
You will be paid in cash before you leave the building each day. This usually covers a portion of the costs of most daycare services.

OTHER QUESTIONS

What is the age limit for jurors?
All persons between the ages of 18 and 70 are required to serve. If you are over 70 you are not required by law to serve and you will be automatically excused by answering no to question number 3 on your personal history questionnaire. However, persons over 70 may serve if in good health and able to do so.

I was convicted of a felony, can I still serve?
No, you may not serve. Please provide proof of your sentencing status.

My religion prohibits me from judging another person.
If you are requesting to be excused on religious grounds, please submit a written statement in support of this request.

I served less than one year ago.
Jurors who have served less than 12 months ago are not required to serve.

I am called every year and I know people who have never been called.
Juror information is provided to us by the Secretary of State Office in Lansing. These names are taken from the driver's license and state ID card listing which the Secretary of State's Office maintains. Names are then randomly selected by computer system.

I live in another state during the winter months and I won't be in Michigan during any of the months in my quarter.
Please advise which months you will be available to serve.
