It is the mission of the Berrien County Government to provide leadership, cooperation with all units of government, and sound fiscal management and planning, thereby promoting public safety, health, well being, and prosperity in order to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.

Commissioners Minutes and Agendas Resolutions

Their board meetings are held every Thursday (excluding holidays, night meetings and the 5th Thursday). With the exception of night meetings, the regular location for their meetings is at the Berrien County Administration Center, 701 Main St., St. Joseph, Michigan. Their typical meeting day looks like this:

8:30 a.m. - Committee of the Whole - The intent of this meeting is to allow a forum for information to be provided by the County Administrator. Issues will be discussed but no action will be taken other than approval of the prior meeting minutes.

9:15 a.m. - The Administration, Finance, and Personnel & Human Services meetings are held. The Board of Commissioners oversees the County’s business via committees, thus the commissioners are divided up among the three committees.

Each department within the county government and some other outside agencies have a "parent" committee that the department can provide updates to.

The Committee assignments are as follows:

Administration - Animal Control, Building & Grounds, Local Emergency Planning Commission (including Communications Team, Business Team, Special Needs Team, Public Information/Education Team, Mitigation Team, and Exercise Team), Disaster Planning Committee, Motorpool, Prosecutor, Public Defender, Road Commission, Sheriff (including Victim Services Unit), Trial Court (including Civil Court, Criminal Court, Family Court, Friend of the Court, Jury Board, Juvenile Center, Community Corrections Advisory Board), Western Michigan Legal Services, Chief Elected Officials Meeting, SMART.  

Finance - Building Authority, Clerk (including Election Canvassers Board), Community Development (including Brownfield Authority, Economic Development Corporation, Land Bank Authority, Land Preservation Board, Loan Administration Board, Planning Commission, Public Transportation Local Advisory Council, Public Works Board, Solid Waste Planning, Housing Resource Network, Cornerstone Alliance Board), Drains, Equalization, Financial Services,  Information Systems, Pension Board,  Printing, Pokagon New Buffalo Area Local Revenue Sharing Board, Records, Senior Centers, Treasurer,  Trust Investment Advisory Committee.

Personnel & Human Services - Area Agency on Aging, Berrien County Human Services Council, Department of Human Services, GIS/Land Description, Health Department (including Board of Heath, Sewage Appeals Board, Health Dept. Well & Septic Review Board), Human Resources, Mental Health Authority (including SWMBH Substance Use Disorder Oversight Policy Board), Parks & Recreation (including Recycling, Parks & Recreation Commission, Solid Waste Consortium, Berrien County Historical Association), Register of Deeds, Southwestern Michigan Planning Commission (including Administration/Executive Committee, Niles Area Transportation Study and Twin Cities Area Transportation), Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency,  Surveyor, Veterans, Workforce Development (KINEXUS including  Intelligence Committee, Improvement Committee, Leadership Committee, Investment Committee), Michigan Association of Counties Miscellaneous Committees.

10:30 a.m. - Board of Commissioner Meetings - Regular board meeting where Commissioners take formal action including but not limited to the approval of resolutions.
