JUVENILE CENTER
Temporary Youth Specialist ($11.75/hr)
Required: Thirty semester or forty-five quarter hours of college education which includes three semesters or four quarter hours of psychology.
Duties: The Temporary Youth Specialist works as an on-call employee to fill temporary vacancies in the fulltime Youth Specialist schedule.
Note: The Berrien County Juvenile Center is a 24-hour facility. Employees may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Lead Program Manager ($39,272)
Required: Bachelor's Degree in health, science or management field and one year experience in overseeing a construction project or hazard remediation project; OR Associate's Degree in health, science or management field and three years experience in overseeing a construction project or hazard remediation project; OR high school diploma or GED and five years experience in overseeing a construction project or hazard remediation project.
Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license; regular, reliable and predictable attendance is required; maintain Lead Risk Assessor/Lead Inspection Certification and Lead Supervisor Certification (may be obtained upon hire); in times of public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.
NOTE: This is a grant funded position and therefore when the grant expires, the position will be eliminated from the Health Department complement unless other funding is available.
Desired: Professional knowledge of the concepts, principles and practices of environmental health services; professional knowledge of the principles and practices of lead hazard remediation; meticulous attention to detail so as to complete HUD reports accurately and in a timely manner; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form with clients, program staff, public and private agencies and businesses, and the general public; knowledge of supervisory and training procedures and practices in order to develop and maintain an effective staff.
Duties: Under general supervision of the Environmental Health Services Manager, is responsible for the programmatic operation of the Berrien County Health Department Lead Remediation Program. Lead Program Manager is responsible for all activities outlined in the Department of Housing and Urban Development contract for Lead Hazard Reduction Program. Administer and manage all aspects of the project and staff per the grant request; coordinate and oversee referral network of project partners, collaborate with city and county government for referral and leveraging purposes and maintain a strong working relationship with local lead contractors; review resident applications for remediation work to determine eligibility and prioritization; oversee and prioritize all risk assessment/lead inspection done by certified BCHD staff; enroll homes in the Lead Hazard Reduction Program as appropriate by confirming lead inspection report results, initiating a HUD file, determining any funding partners, and assigning the home to be managed internally or through a designated outside firm; personally manage or oversee the lead remediation of approximately 40 homes per year by writing specification, solicitation of bids, and supervision of contractors; oversee all clearance testing done by certified BCHD staff; assure that all HUD reports are completed on time and accurately; other duties as assigned.
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT - MARINE DIVISION
Starting pay: $10.00/hr.
The Berrien County Sheriff's Department Marine Division will be accepting applications for the 2010 boating season. Applications will only be accepted from December 1, 2009 through January 15, 2010.
This is a temporary/seasonal position. New deputies will begin training on the weekends during March and April. Patrols will begin with the Memorial Day holiday and end with the Labor Day holiday.
Hours: Hours are based on a 40 hour work week, which is also weather dependent. Deputies will be required to work weekends with mandatory holidays.
Requirements: Must be 18 years of age and out of high school at least one year prior to the start of the boating season. Must be able to pass a complete background check. Able to work well with others. Prior boating knowledge and a mechanical aptitude is a plus.
Duties: Under the supervision of the Marine Lieutenant and/or Senior Deputy responsibilities include enforcement of the Marine Safety Act on Lake Michigan as well as the many inland lakes and rivers within Berrien County. Deputies will be responsible for proper maintenance on boats, engines, trailers and vehicles, and caring for all County issued gear and equipment.
JUVENILE CENTER
Case Manager ($35,000 - $44,926)
Required: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Corrections, Criminal Justice, or other related human services field and one year of paid fulltime professional experience in a juvenile facility, court system or other related child welfare/social services agency. Must possess a valid vehicle operator's license. Works flexible hours, weekends and holidays in the fulfillment of duties.
Desired: Graduate coursework in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Corrections Administration, Counseling or Psychology. Knowledge of professional standards and administrative rules relating to juvenile detention and residential facilities. Knowledge of computer applications in justice systems. Paid fulltime experience working with juvenile delinquents or adult offenders in the justice field. Experience in coordinating the daily programming and stated responsibilities in a juvenile facility. Experience in group oriented/cognitive behavioral treatment or detention programs. Knowledge of evidence based practices and assessment tools. Michigan licensure in Social Work, Psychology, or related behavioral health field.
Duties: Under the supervision and direction of the assigned Manager or Supervisor, serves as the designated social services worker in the Juvenile Center programs. Participates in planning, implementing, supervising and reporting on programs, projects and tasks for youth detained or placed in the Juvenile Center and their families. Serves as the group, individual, and family counselor for residents and their families; delegated the primary responsibility for coordinating social services and treatment plans for assigned youth, as well as maintaining accurate and complete case files for these youth; participates in the development and implementation of the staff development program; participates in the planning and implementation of therapeutic recreational programs and activities for youth; serves as a lead worker responsible for delegating assignments to staff and ensuring the completion of program related tasks. Required to work a rotating schedule.

Environmental Health Technician ($27,114)
Required: Associate's Degree with a major in environmental health, biological, chemical or physical sciences, or a related field and one year of public health or related experience; OR high school diploma or its equivalent and three years of public health or related experience. Must possess a valid vehicle operator's license and a vehicle. In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.
Desired: Experience and certification as a lead hazard assessor; good oral and written communication skills; ability to handle multiple tasks in short timeframes.
Duties: Inspects and evaluates premises for environmental hazards which may cause health problems; explains the causes and effects of environmental hazards and indicates the actions needed to prevent, reduce or remove the hazards' issues and enforces notices to comply with local, state laws, ordinances and regulations; and prepares detailed and accurate records and reports. Creates charts, report formats, etc.; maintains calendars and schedules meetings and appointments; maintains inventory and other duties as assigned.
